Hansel is an Australian Cattle Dog / Red Heeler Mix. He currently weighs around 25 lbs. We don't anticipate that he will be any larger than 35-40 lbs.

Hansel was born in August 2022. He joined our rescue in November 2022. Hansel is a really good dog. He is extremely smart, crate-trained, and potty-trained. His crate is his safe place.

He is extremely loyal and loving to whomever he chooses as his person. He never forgets those he trusts. Outside of doggie daycare or in a safe home environment, Hansel is timid. He is easily startled, cautious, and on guard with sounds, animals, and people that he is unfamiliar with. He will need reassurance and positive repetition to accept new things. He would benefit from a trainer familiar with working with pandemic dogs.

Hansel is not a fan of car rides. For his safety, he must be harnessed to a seatbelt or ride in a carrier during car rides. His instinct is to automatically get out of a car. He is extremely nervous during car rides and will whine.

We believe that Hansel would do best in a home familiar with his breed. We also believe that he would do best in a home without young children due to his fear issues as he is easily startled by sudden movement and noise.

He can be very whiney when scared, startled, or when people come to the door or pass near windows. This might be an issue for someone living in an apt or condo situation.

Hansel is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, de-wormed, micro-chipped, and Heartworm negative.

We are a very small rescue. We are a 100% volunteer rescue. We do not have any paid staff. All travel expenses for vetting, intake, meet and greets, home-visits, etc. is paid for by the generosity of our volunteers.

We do require an in-home visit, screening, and verifiable references.

Due to our in-home visit requirements we are ONLY adopting within the city of Chicago, IL. We will not respond to applicants outside of our adoption area.

We will ONLY consider applicants who have filled out our application in full and abide by our rescue protocol.

We will not arrange any meet and greets unless all references have been checked and applicants have been approved.
